SCOTT BALTZ
featured with James Linehan
May 23-June 22
Reception Saturday, May 24

The core of my work has focused on my interest with the landscape since my early twenties when working with a large format field camera. Nature is sustaining; where I feel whole, at peace and filled with curiosity. That same curiosity is the driving force in my studio practice. My methods and practices feed the possibilities for the unexpected in the making of a painting. The past few years have marked a departure in my practice; presently working from an intuitive place without relying on preliminary sketches or underpaintings. Using tools such as brushes, trowels, scrapers and rags to manipulate the paint surface, the physical nature of applying and removing paint becomes a dynamic push and pull until reaching a point of resolution. While I have no formal training, I look to such artists as Frank Auerbach, Tom Thomson, Per Kirkeby, and Elizabeth Cummings.                                                                      ~ R.
