John Stass
To love sculpture, and to live with it, can be an extraordinarily rich experience. Its greatest reward is that you the viewer are in part the creator, for a fine work of sculpture invites constant exploration. If you find sculptures that grow on you the more you look at them and you have an opportunity to acquire them for your home, you will be adding a sense of beauty to your life that will be never-ending. David Finn, How to Look at Sculpture
We are pleased to have sculptor John Stass be this year's Littlefield Gallery Sculptor-in-Residence at UMaine. Pictured is the model for "Syntax," an 84" sculpture created with 3/8th inch steel plate on a 60" x 30" steel base. The sculpture will be installed on the UMaine campus at Stevens Hall, in memory of Dr. Wilmarth Starr . Dr. Starr was on the faculty and head of its Modern Language Department from 1937-1960. His son, Judson Starr, is a patron of the Littlefield Gallery Sculptor-in-Residence series and this piece is dedicated to his father.

Minimalism… “Enough is Enough”
Presented by John Stass
This program will consist of a lecture and discussion related to Minimalism in the arts. By exploring its roots through painting, sculpture, photography and more… an attempt will be made to link the core tenants of Minimalism in affecting contemporary life.
Presenter John Stass has had a multi-faceted career in business and design. John will share how creativity has shaped and enriched him both directly and accidentally… and how relatively late in life he “broke” into the world of art.
John will augment his presentation in the Sculpture Studio by holding a “demonstration/workshop” on creating mid-century modern minimalist works in wood.

A few words about John Stass...capturing moments of space, color and light
As an artist, I paint on a variety of supports using various media, and sculpt primarily in wood and metals. My photographs accentuate the contrasts and textures of black & white. Coming out of the corporate world of L. L. Bean in my earlier days, I have been a creative driven entrepreneur for 30 years. In my former career as a management consultant I counted some of the nation’s most highly regarded companies as clients.
At the mid-point of my life, as a designer of custom furniture and with the assistance of several very capable artisan grade builders, I created and produced the brands of Katahdin Studio Furniture, Zen Harbor Living and Katahdin Home. My work sold world-wide, often to a celebrity clientele, including Melissa Etheridge, Andy Griffith, and the Jay Leno Show.
Today, I am once again an independent artist and designer. Art plays a role in everyone’s existence… sometimes deliberately and sometimes indirectly. I am fortunate to have been able to incorporate art in many of its forms in all that has occupied my life. I would be honored to share my art with you.
