Encaustic is the oldest known painting technique. The medium is comprised of molten beeswax and damar resin (derived from tree sap). Dry pigment is added to make the paint. The paint is melted onto a hot electric palette and applied in layers. Heat is used to bind each layer to the one before. The layers are then fused together and, when allowed to harden on a firm support, the painting meets archival standards.
